Texas State Trooper Erik Burse answers questions from the media during a brief press conference at the Walker County Fairgrounds near the scene of a double homicide investigation. A Walker County resident came home Wednesday afternoon to find both his wife and their 2-year-old grandchild dead at the residence. Texas Rangers were in the early stages of a double-homicide investigation on M. Williams Road, west of Highway 30.

Jean Wilkins Dember, right, protests the execution of Kimberly McCarthy on Wednesday outside the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Huntsville Unit, where the death chamber is located. McCarthy became the 500th person executed in Texas since the state resumed carrying out the death penalty in 1982.
